Milestones

My road in life has been direct.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and literature but wasn’t really sure what to do with my degree.
I got a job working in a restaurant to pay the bills while I tried to figure out my path.
I shared about my background in language and my interest in working with people at a coworker’s Halloween party and was connected with the opportunity to teach adult learners.
I got started in the education field working with adult immigrant and refugee students learning English and participating in a family education program.
Through that work, I learned a lot about family engagement and how the National Center for Families Learning supports organizations in those efforts.
I now work as a training specialist for the National Center for Families Learning.

Day to Day

My days vary. I may be traveling to different school districts or meeting with community partners in other states. My day could be spent preparing for one of those trips. I may be in the office collaborating with colleagues to make sure our trainings are ready to go. I could also be working remotely from home.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for everyone

Get involved where you can. This isn't new work but it's a really exciting time and there are a lot of different opportunities to get involved. Think about where you can get connected locally or nationally. Any connection point is a good place to start. Find organizations near you that have resources to help you get involved.
