Day In The Life Of A Pulmonologist

My Day to Day

During my ICU weeks, I care for critically ill patients, make hospital rounds, and stay on call overnight in case someone needs urgent treatment. The rest of the month, I split my time between seeing patients in clinic, performing procedures like bronchoscopies and chest tube insertions, reading sleep studies, and working with specialists to diagnose and treat complex lung diseases. No matter the setting, my focus is always on providing the best possible care for my patients.

Advice for getting started

I did not get an undergraduate degree because I received my education in Pakistan, where I went from high school directly to medical school. Pathways in the U.S. are different in that there's a requirement for an undergraduate degree. I do believe that earning your undergraduate degree has its value and is a good first step before deciding to pursue medical school.

Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

    I decided early in life that I wanted to become a physician and pursued medicine with that goal always in mind.

  • 2.

    I earned my medical degree in Pakistan and completed my residency and fellowship training in Arizona, specializing in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.

  • 3.

    After finishing my training, I returned to Pakistan to teach and practice medicine at my alma mater, Aga Khan University.

  • 4.

    Three years later, I accepted a position back in the United States before ultimately discovering an opportunity to build my career in Mississippi.

  • 5.

    When I visited the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I fell in love with the people, the quality of medicine, and the chance to make a difference in an underserved community.

  • 6.

    As I built my career here, I helped expand advanced pulmonary and critical care services so patients could receive leading-edge treatment close to home.

  • 7.

    I also adopted new technologies like robotic bronchoscopy while continuing to learn and bring the latest evidence-based care to my patients.

  • 8.

    Today, I care for patients across the ICU, clinic, and sleep lab while continuing to learn, teach, and advance pulmonary medicine in Mississippi.
