Milestones

My road in life has been direct.
My parents purchased our farm back in 1968 and my family has been farming it ever since.
I ran a consulting company for a while, which allowed me to gain experience in rules, regulations, and government policy.
In 2014, we started Common Ground Mobile Market and Mobile Food Hub, a mobile farmer’s market.
Common Ground started with seven senior centers and has since grown to deliver local produce bi-weekly to 35 sites in multiple counties.
In addition to my work with Common Ground, I also serve on several boards, including the National Farmers Union policy committee, the Kansas Farmers Union, and the Kansas State Extension Board.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for everyone

Kansas State has a youth development program called 4-H, which is a great resource for youth to gain valuable skills. I also recommend getting involved with the MANRRS Program, a national program for minorities in science. Finally, get connected with a farmer to gain hands-on farming experience.
