Day In The Life Of A President Of A Healthcare University

My Day to Day

I spend a lot of time in meetings with faculty. I'll also go out and meet with community members and set up partnerships with other community organizations. I meet with other leaders and peers. It's also my job to set the vision of the university, safeguard the quality of our academic programs, and inspire others to carry out our mission.

Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

    I was born in Beijing, China.

  • 2.

    During the farming season, I worked hard labor during the day in a Mongolian village and studied an advanced learning dictionary at night.

  • 3.

    I earned my medical degree from Beijing Medical College.

  • 4.

    While in medical school, I wanted to become an ophthalmologist but my index finger needed to be amputated due to an injury, which deemed me unfit to become a surgical physician.

  • 5.

    At that point, I decided I wanted to become a professor instead—I was assigned to work as an assistant professor for immunology, which then led to me earning my master’s degree in immunology.

  • 6.

    After immigrating to the United States, I earned my Ph.D. in immunology and then applied to a variety of jobs within biotech companies, pharmaceutical companies, and universities.

  • 7.

    I ultimately chose to work as a professor for California State University, San Bernardino.

  • 8.

    I built my career up in science and healthcare education and finally landed at my current position as president of San Merritt University.
