Life & Career Milestones
My path in life has been direct
1.
I was born into a migrant farmworker family and grew up moving between Texas, Michigan, and Idaho.
2.
At 13, I caught the creative bug—I started drawing and fell in love with art.
3.
I had no mentors or internet access, so I taught myself by studying cartoons, trains, magazines, and graffiti.
4.
With the support of my high school art teacher, I built a graffiti-style portfolio that earned me a scholarship to Boise State University.
5.
Right after college, I landed a student position at the Bureau of Reclamation, where I've now worked for over 24 years.
6.
I balanced being a full-time artist, father, and community activist by prioritizing my time and staying rooted in purpose.
7.
I also became a mentor and arts commissioner, using my experience to uplift young people and create public art programs.
8.
Through my art, I tell stories of my migrant roots—painting asparagus fields and monarch butterflies to honor where I come from.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
How are you going to make a career out of art?
How I responded:
My parents were supportive but also hesitant about my decision to pursue art as a career. When I first started exploring art, they gave me room to experiment and express myself. But when I decided to go to college to pursue art as a career path, they were doubtful about what that meant. Fortunately, while hesitant, they still tried to support me. You'll be met with others' doubt but only you know your dreams and goals. Surround yourself with support and stay grounded in your own determination.
