Life & Career Milestones
I've taken a lot of twists and turns
1.
Education has always been significant in my family, as both of my parents immigrated to the U.S. for educational opportunities.
2.
I studied political science in college and thought I’d go on to become a lawyer, but I had a change of heart and decided to pursue teaching.
3.
I started my career as a high school English teacher, and primarily taught the East African refugee population—this was close to my heart as English wasn’t my first language either.
4.
After teaching for a couple of years, I got the opportunity to work for the Tennessee Department of Education, where I started working in education policy.
5.
While I loved the experience, I realized that doing work at the state policy level was a bit too removed from the students and educators for me.
6.
I moved to Chicago, Illinois, and got a job with TNTP, where I worked with different school systems to help them set themselves up for success to better support students.
7.
I learned that while I liked policy, it wasn’t exactly the angle I wanted to steer my career—I found that I was actually interested in helping nonprofits run effectively to achieve missions.
8.
I then spent about six years running the Chicago office for Teach for America before getting the opportunity to join One Million Degrees, where I currently work as the CEO.
