- Doctorate - Spanish-Latinx Cultural Studies - University of Houston
Life & Career Milestones
My path in life has been direct
- 1. - I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana.
- 2. - I was studying film at the University of Oklahoma and was happy and doing well—but when Hurricane Katrina hit, I had a change of heart and decided to move back home.
- 3. - I moved back to New Orleans and decided to finish school and earn my degree in Spanish; however, I didn’t really have a plan for after college.
- 4. - Unsure of the path I wanted to take, I knew I was technically qualified to teach, so I took a job as a Spanish and world history teacher at the same K-12 school I had graduated from.
- 5. - After deciding I wasn’t where I wanted to be, I went back to school for my master’s and doctoral degrees—all the while, I kept teaching.
- 6. - When I started teaching at my current school, my dad had recently passed away and I was at a low point—that’s when I started dancing with students and using social media to have more fun with my job.
- 7. - Since then, I’ve been using dancing and music to have fun and connect with my students.
Defining Moments
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
- When I started teaching at my current school, I was burnt out and wasn't enjoying work at all. I started dancing and using social media to spark my energy and have fun. A few years later, I feel like I'm in the sweet spot of my career.
- My dad passed away at the same time that I started teaching at Bellaire High School. The trauma only added to the dark place I was already in. It took me focusing on myself and choosing to have fun and be authentic in order to feel connected.
