Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

You should stick to one profession and not change jobs so much. You should start your professional career right after college and start making good money, etc.

  • How I responded:

I recognized the importance of following my passions. I knew that there were certain things I'd always regret if I didn't at least try them. I was very strategic about my moves. I was very self-reflective and paid attention to what I liked and didn't like about various experiences. That way, each time I made a change, I felt like I was making progress. I also asked for advice from many people with more experience than me. Most importantly, I followed my own definition of success.

  • Generic food and clothing and hand-me-downs were typical in my large family. But we always found time to enjoy each other's company and there was no shortage of love. Be smart with what money you do have, and find joy and fun in simple activities.
