Day In The Life Of A Career Advisor

My Day to Day

I spend a lot of my day meeting with students, providing direct support, and having great conversations about what they want to do, what they like to do, and how their classes are going. Most of my work involves meetings and emails. I also teach a communications class, which includes grading students' classwork as well. Finally, I put some kind of energy into my own business each day. That can mean filming something, creating content, or working on my website.

Skills & Education

Advice for getting started

While building my career as a teacher, I would get asked to take on different leadership roles. In many cases I'd doubt myself and question if I was ready, but I'd take on the roles anyway. Each time I took on a new role, I gained new skills and learned what I liked and didn't like.

Here's the path I took:

  • High School

  • Bachelor's Degree

    Communications

    Arizona State University

  • Graduate Degree

    Communication Studies

    Arizona State University

  • Certification

    Secondary Education

    Rio Salado College

  • Doctorate

    Organizational Leadership

    Grand Canyon University

  • Doctorate

    Educational Leadership Studies

    Wilkes University

I don't know if I'm ready to take on leadership roles.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I've had a lot of instances with sexual assault starting from a young age all the way through college. I internalized that trauma. It was like I was carrying around a 50 lb shame backpack. It's something I really had to spend time working through.

  • I deal with physical trauma and chronic pain from multiple car accidents, as well as a tumor on my spine. While this is a struggle, I've learned to live with it and not let it change who I am.

  • I went to a treatment center two different times for depression and anxiety. I was wound so tight from so many traumas. I'm still working on this but I've made a lot of progress in the last couple of years.
