Advice for getting started
Do your research. Take the time to look at the spectrum of all of the things that can be in UX design. Reach out to people on LinkedIn who are currently working in a role you're interested in and ask them questions. Ask what they did for schooling and how long it took them to get into their role.
Here's the path I took:
High School
Certification
UX Design
General Assembly
Life & Career Milestones
I've taken a lot of twists and turns
1.
After high school, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, so I initially went to college for zoology because that was a hobby of mine.
2.
My mom discouraged me from continuing with zoology because she didn’t think I’d make any money, so I tried a few other things.
3.
College just didn’t really seem right for me at the time and I ultimately left with enough credits for an associate degree in nutrition.
4.
I joined the workforce and hoped I’d find something that sparked my interest.
5.
I spent about 10 years working in various positions but never really found anything that utilized my two main interests—helping people and problem solving.
6.
I learned about UX design from a colleague and was intrigued—I sat down with that colleague for a few lunches to learn more about her work.
7.
After doing more research into UX design, I decided to do a three-month immersive UX design immersive program with General Assembly.
8.
About a month after finishing the program, I got my first UX job and have been doing this ever since!
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
You're not going to make any money doing zoology.
How I responded:
I didn't know what I wanted to study when I went to college, so I picked zoology because that was a hobby of mine. My mom discouraged me from continuing with zoology because she didn't think I'd make any money. I ended up listening to her and trying different things. However, it turned out that college just wasn't right for me in general at the time, so I left. After working for a while, I finally found something I was very interested in—UX design—and went to an immersive program to learn more.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
When I initially went to college, it was a struggle. I faced personal, family, and financial issues. I was working full-time while in school. I was also nervous to invest so much money into something I wasn't sure about.
