Day to Day

A day in the life as a school counselor would consist of checking emails from key stakeholders, checking in with students regarding their academic, social-emotional, or college and career inquiries. I provide supervision during pass periods, lunch, and after school. Depending on the time of the year, I'll be working on classroom presentations, running groups, meeting with community partners, running 504 / ATC / SST meetings, submitting CPS reports, or conducting Risk Assessments.

Skills & Qualities Beyond School

Empathy is very important in education. A lot of times in education, adults will feel entitled to a certain amount of love and respect but they won't give that same amount to the kids. It's important to have empathy when dealing with the students too.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for everyone

To work as a school counselor, you'll need to get your bachelor's and master's degrees, and complete internship hours. Other than that, I think a lot of people overcomplicate the process. You really just need a kind heart and a desire to work with kids. If you want to work with youth and have an impact on their future, then I encourage you to look at the programs that will allow you to do that.
