[MUSIC] Teacher burnout is a real big issue. And I just wonder like how people cope with that because I don't want to end up being the teacher that's all complacent and puts on movies because I'm just so tired. I teach English at Hesperia High School and I teach all juniors. It's so great to like, watch a kid struggle with stuff and then figure it out and then look at you and be, I'm so glad that you helped me, or nobody's ever took the time to explain this to me. Kids tell me that all the time, watching kids be awesome is just like the best thing ever, I love it. But I question why I would keep teaching because I feel like it's not sustainable, if you're in it for the long haul, it's exhausting, it wears on you. [MUSIC] I have a lot of students with really difficult home lives and they feel comfortable talking to me about it, which is great. And they're always great students and they're really invested in my class but it's hard to be that shoulder for people constantly and not feel that weigh on you. It's the emotional burden of it and being that emotional support system that we know that they need, it can be really, really draining. [MUSIC] I am interviewing people who are prominent in the field of education, I want to know how other people have managed to balance helping your students and still looking out for your own well being. So, emotionally how do you not become jaded and just detach from that? How do you stay invested in your students without wearing yourself down? [MUSIC] 

Nothing makes Jasmine light up quite like seeing one of her students conquer a problem they’ve been struggling with. Still, being a teacher comes with a lot of hills and valleys. Some days, she fears becoming one of those teachers who just puts on movies for her kids because she’s so burnt out, but it’s a challenge to stay on top of everything.
