Artificial Intelligence Disclosure
RTN’s Virtual Roadtrip is an AI-powered career exploration tool. The following disclosures apply to all users of the Virtual Roadtrip. What the AI does: The Virtual Roadtrip uses artificial intelligence algorithms to process your inputs, including career interests, goals, and responses to reflective prompts, and generates personalized career pathway recommendations, suggested interview clips from RTN’s library, and educational content. The Virtual Roadtrip is an exploration and inspiration tool only. It is not a substitute for professional career counseling, academic advising, or mental health services.
Limitations: AI-generated outputs may be inaccurate, incomplete, or reflect biases present in underlying data. AI systems can produce errors including hallucinations (outputs that are plausible-sounding but factually incorrect). RTN does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any purpose of AI-generated recommendations.
AI data practices: Your inputs to the Virtual Roadtrip, interest selections, and reflective responses, are processed to generate recommendations and are retained by RTN as part of its product data infrastructure. RTN owns all AI chat logs, logic, prompts, and system architecture used in the Virtual Roadtrip. For users accessing the Virtual Roadtrip through a Student User Account, AI chat data is not automatically shared back to the partner platform unless expressly agreed in the applicable Data Processing Agreement or Partnership Agreement. RTN will not use user inputs to the Virtual Roadtrip to train external large language models (LLMs) without prior opt-in consent or, for Student Users, prior written consent from the school, district, or Educational Partner.

Users who submit content to the Interview Archive acknowledge this indefinite retention and RTN’s right to license that content to third-party platforms as described in this Policy.
- Analytics data (Google Analytics, Alchemer): retained per the applicable third-party platform’s data retention policies, subject to RTN’s configuration and deletion settings.

THE FOLLOWING PRIVACY TERMS APPLY TO RTN EDUCATIONAL AND STUDENT USERS ONLY
Educator and Student Users
This Educator and Student Users section supplements RTN’s Privacy Policy in connection with Student Users’ use of RTN’s Services. When RTN’s Services, including the Virtual Roadtrip, Roadtrip Nation Experience (RTNE), Community Hubs, and related tools, are used as part of a school’s, district’s, or Educational Partner’s program, the personal information related to school users (“Student Users”) may include information defined as “education records” by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) or other information protected by applicable state student data privacy laws. We refer to this information as “Student Data.”
Our Commitment
RTN’s Services are designed to comply with applicable U.S. student data privacy laws. Our collection and use of Student Data is governed by our agreements with schools, districts, and Educational Partners, by this Privacy Policy, and by applicable privacy laws. We work with schools and districts to protect Student Data consistent with FERPA (20 U.S.C. §1232g), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) (15 U.S.C. §6501 et seq.) where applicable, and the state laws described below. If you have questions about reviewing, modifying, or deleting the personal information of an Educator or Student User, please contact your school or district directly.
Student User Accounts and Student Access
RTN typically provides Educator and Student Users with access to its Services pursuant to a formal agreement: a Partnership Agreement with an Educational Partner, or a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) with a school or district. An "Educational Partner" is a third-party educational organization, such as a college and career readiness platform, curriculum provider, professional association or educational nonprofit, that makes the Services available to educator and student users within its own network. Subject to the applicable agreement or integration method, a Student User Account may be established when:
- An educator or administrator creates a class on the Service and provisions access through RTN's educator link and associated class code; or
- A Student User accesses the Services through a Single Sign-On (SSO) integration.
If you are a school or district and wish to ensure student accounts are established and managed as Student User Accounts under this supplement, please contact RTN at privacy@roadtripnation.org.
AI-Powered Features
RTN’s Virtual Roadtrip is an AI-powered career exploration tool used within school and district deployments. RTN’s AI-powered features provided to schools are designed to comply with applicable U.S. student data privacy laws. Specifically:
- RTN advises Educator and Student Users that the Virtual Roadtrip is an AI-powered tool, and that inputs to the tool should not include sensitive personal or student information beyond what is necessary for career exploration.
- RTN’s agreements with the providers of AI technology used in the Virtual Roadtrip do not permit those providers to use student input data to train their AI models.
- AI-generated outputs from the Virtual Roadtrip are career exploration recommendations only. They are not a substitute for professional career counseling, academic advising, or other professional services.
- RTN will not use Student Data generated through AI interactions to build profiles of students for non-educational purposes.
How We Collect and Use Student Data
RTN collects, maintains, uses, and shares Student Data only for authorized educational purposes and as described in this Privacy Policy, including as directed by the school, the Educator or Student User, and/or the student’s parent or legal guardian. Specifically:
- RTN collects Student Data for the purpose of delivering RTN’s educational Services (including the Virtual Roadtrip, RTNE, and Community Hubs), providing educators and counselors with visibility into student progress and engagement, and improving RTN’s educational products using de-identified and aggregated analytics.
- RTN will not use Student Data for targeted advertising, to build personal profiles of students for non-educational purposes, or for any commercial purpose unrelated to the delivery of educational services.
- RTN will not sell Student Data.
- RTN will not use Student Data to train external large language models (LLMs) or generative AI systems operated by or for the benefit of third parties, without prior written consent from the school, district, or Educational Partner.
No Targeted Advertising
RTN does not use, disclose, or compile Student Data of Student Users for the purpose of marketing or advertising third-party commercial products or services, including targeted advertising. RTN does not display behavioral advertising to Student Users accessing the Services through a Student User Account.
How We Disclose Student Data
RTN discloses Student Data only in the following circumstances:
- To RTN’s subcontractors and service providers who assist in delivering the Services to schools, under written agreements that restrict their use of Student Data to school purposes and require equivalent data security measures;
- To the school or district that authorized the student’s access, as permitted by FERPA and the applicable agreement;
- To other Educator and Student Users on the Service (such as the student’s counselor, teacher or school official) to the extent permitted by the school’s account configuration; and
- As required by law, court order, or valid legal process
RTN will not disclose Student Data to any third party for commercial purposes, for advertising, or in connection with an RTN product or service not covered by the school’s agreement with RTN.
Data Security
RTN maintains a comprehensive data security program designed to protect Student Data. RTN’s security program includes encryption of all student data at rest and in transit, role-based access controls, and incident response and breach notification procedures. RTN’s program is designed to be consistent with recognized security standards. RTN will notify the school or district of any confirmed breach of Student Data without unreasonable delay and in accordance with applicable law.
How We Retain and Delete Student Data
RTN will not knowingly retain Student Data beyond the period required to support an educational purpose, unless authorized by the school, the student, or the student’s parent or legal guardian. When a school or district’s agreement with RTN expires or terminates, RTN will delete or de-identify Student Data associated with that school’s accounts within the timeframe specified in the applicable agreement.
Student Users who continue to use their accounts for personal, non-school purposes after the conclusion of a school program may associate their accounts with a personal account. In such cases, the user (or the user’s parent or legal guardian) is responsible for account deletion or transfer to a personal account. Users may request account deletion or transfer by contacting privacy@roadtripnation.org.
In some cases, RTN’s school and district partners manage student accounts through a formal district agreement that includes rostering and administrative services. In these cases, deletion requests may need to be referred to the school or district. Schools should contact privacy@roadtripnation.org to request deletion of Student Data associated with Student User Accounts.
State Student Data Privacy Laws
RTN’s school-facing Services are designed to comply with applicable state student data privacy laws. RTN monitors and seeks to comply with applicable student data privacy laws in all states where it provides school-authorized Services. Schools and districts with questions about state-specific requirements should contact privacy@roadtripnation.org.
FERPA
RTN operates as a school official under the direction of schools and districts for purposes of FERPA. In this capacity, RTN: (a) will not use education records or student personally identifiable information received from a school or district for purposes other than those specified in the applicable agreement; (b) will comply with FERPA’s re-disclosure restrictions and will require any subprocessors receiving education records to do the same; and (c) will support the school’s or district’s obligations to provide parents and eligible students with FERPA rights of access, correction, and consent.
Questions About Student Data
If you have questions about specific practices relating to Student Data provided to RTN by a school, please direct your questions first to your school or district. Schools and districts with questions about RTN’s data practices may contact RTN’s privacy team at privacy@roadtripnation.org.
This Educator and Student Users section does not apply to information that a student or other individual may provide to RTN independent of the student’s use of RTN’s Services at the direction of the school. For example, if a user links their existing personal account to their Student User Account, or elects to retain their RTN activity in a personal account after the conclusion of a school program, the information associated with the personal account is governed by RTN’s general Privacy Policy, not this supplement.
