Milestones

My road in life has been direct.
Growing up, she worked at a clothing store that had been in her family for three generations.
Her father would take her on buying trips to New York, and those were exciting to her—she knew she wanted to be a buyer when she grew up.
She went to Miami University, where she decided that if she wanted to run a retail store, she should get a degree in business; during her courses, she found she also excelled in marketing.
After graduating, she took a job at a department store, where she found a mentor with whom she stayed in touch with for years afterward.
She stayed with that store for five years, but her job there required a lot of travel—when she started to settle down and start a family, she knew it was time to make a change.
Her mentor had ended up starting his own business—which became Fossil—and when she reached back out to him, he offered her a job.
She’s been with the company for 27 years and chalks up her success to the connections she’s made and her commitment to staying curious and learning about her job.
As a manager, she says that her personal definition of success is when the people around her feel excited by, and engaged with their work.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for high school students

Be present and try different things. Don't always stick to what you are doing 100%. Diversify your knowledge base and learn from other people and other experience.
