We're only three days from the end of our trip but things are not slowing down at all. If anything, today was one of the most frantic on the road. We woke up in Portland with all the best intentions of leaving early to see as much of the city as we could before we had to drive on. Everyone we spoke to had recommended a stop in Portland. It was a really interesting place and reminded us a lot of a mini-Seattle, it was a shame we couldn't stay longer. While we were wandering round we bumped into a man who told us that the highest falls in Continental America were only half an hour away! We couldn't miss the opportunity to see them so we jumped in Fiona (our car) and made our way to the falls. Multnomah Falls were pretty impressive. I'm not sure exactly how high the falls were but I can make an educated guess.....very, very high. We stayed there for an hour, admiring the view and playing stupid games with our cameras. Then we had to begin our four hour drive down to Days Creek where we were supposed to meet Carl Wilkens, our next interview, the following morning. However, we got a call from him five minutes after leaving Portland saying that he was atually in Portland and free to do the interview there and then. We decided that he was too important to miss so, at 7.30pm at night, we turned Fiona around and headed back into Portland. Carl Wilkens was the only American aid worker to remain in Rwanda during the genocide. He helped a lot of people during his time there, particularly orphans and those in need of first aid assistance. He is now a pastor and teacher in Southern Oregon. What I found particularly inspiring was how much he talked about other people around him and the amazing work they had done rather than all the worthwhile work he had done himself. He talked about how his main passion was people and to what extent that passion had directed his life. He had an incredible story and amazing things to say- well worth the U-turn! After the interview and our first experience of a Wendy's burger meal, we started the four hour drive again. It was a long, tiring journey but we eventually arrived at our hotel at 1.40am in the morning!!!! No sooner had our room door opened than we were in our beds asleep. Our camera men wisely shotgunned the bed, the girls had the sofa and I had a roll-away designed for a small child. It had been a long day and we had another couple of days of long drives ahead, so the decision for a lie-in the following morning was unanimous!
