My Open Road
July 06, 2009
Friday, the third of July, we stayed with my sister, on the SDSU campus. Morning of the fourth Denell and I headed to Garbage Beach with a few old friends from D-town, and plenty of new acquaintances. The water was 62 degrees and turquoise. A long afternoon in the sun celebrating the idea of personal freedom in the many ways I can: drinking, dancing, swimming. And being thankful for it all...
We sat in the sand on Ocean Beach, the focal point of what I pictured a Southern Cali shore town as: Board shops that actually cater to the surfer, rowdy outdoor bars, tall piers, and specific tradition. The firework show was hardly over when the 3,000 plus onlookers began hurling marshmallows in an epic battle, the likes of which I had never experienced. All ages engaged in a free for all in which I witnessed 60 year old men aiming for the face while 7 year old girls dive rolled across the sandy trench to avoid the surfers toss of fluffed up sugar.
Live music. Bar-top dancing. Nothing to complain about. Life is great.
