As a kid growing up in the Midwest, Hugh Hefner found excitement and escape in daydreams fueled by the movies. He calls his childhood an ‘early version of his adult life'—a life definitely full of fantasy and retreat. But way before the glitz and glamour of the Playboy Mansion, Hugh Hefner's Playboy Magazine was a small one-man operation—and it's a surprise that he was able to launch the magazine at all. Needing more cash to fund the first printing of Playboy, Hugh tried to convince anyone he could to give him money. By the end, he had a total of $8000 to produce the first issue. But the magazine was an immediate success, and since its launch in 1953, Playboy has grown into an international pop culture phenomenon. As a periodical pioneer, Hugh hopes his efforts in the entertainment business have helped people become more comfortable with their romantic lives.
