Green RV Application
FAQ
General Roadtrip Questions
What's the difference between a Green RV Roadtrip and an Indie Roadtrip?
Since 2004, every summer we've sent teams of three young adults on the road in our Green RVs to drive across America, connecting with inspirational people along the way. A small film crew tags along to document the experience, ultimately featured as part of the documentary series, Roadtrip Nation.

The application for the Green RV trip is three rounds and relatively time consuming. Generally, Roadtrip Nation sends three teams of three roadtrippers per year for these trips. The Green RV trips are planned by the roadtrippers, from route to interviews, with the help of our filmers. These trips are typically six weeks during the summer, and most teams will book and conduct around 30 interviews.

Not keen on traveling in a Green RV with a film crew? That's okay.
Check out Roadtrip Nation's D.I.Y. roadtrips, the Indie Roadtrip program:
Hit the road on your own time, on your own route and with your own mode of transportation. We've sent individuals on roadtrips across the world and in their very own backyard. The Indie Roadtrips are our way of reaching more students and getting back to the grassroots feel of the original roadtrip, "The Open Road." The roadtrippers themselves document the roadtrip through film, photos and/or blogs. In return the roadtrippers receive a grant to help out with some of the trips expenses.

The Application Process
How do I apply? What do I need to include in my application?
Check out the Apply page in the participate section www.roadtripnation.com/participate/apply.php for all the info you need to put yourself in the running to get behind the wheel of the big green RV! There are three rounds; two of which involve filming a video that will be submitted to us for review.
When can I apply for the Green RV Roadtrip?
We accept applications for our summer Green RV roadtrips once a year. Typically Round 1 will open during the late fall months. Check our website frequently for details, or sign up for our newsletter for updates on the applications. www.roadtripnation.com/participate/apply.php
Can you send me back my application tapes/video after you review them?
Sorry, application materials are not returned. So if you'd like to keep your footage, please make a copy and send us the original.
Can I apply as an individual? What about with my friends, as a team?
If you apply as an individual and are chosen to hit the road, Roadtrip Nation will place you with two other people who have applied as individuals. We will never place an individual with a team of two people who know each other. The roadtrippers spend the months before the trip getting to know one another while planning the trip.

If you want to apply as a team, you MUST HAVE THREE MEMBERS. No more, no less.
How old do we have to be?
At least 18 years of age.
Do we have to be college students?
Not necessarily. College students or students right out of college tend to be the age range that our trips appeal to most. However, if you never went to college, or you are finished with college you are more than welcome to apply. It's more about where you are in your life and what this experience means to you.
What are you looking for in a Green RV Roadtrip team?
Authenticity. Curiosity. Drive. People who are looking to expand their understanding of life, and are able to ask the right questions of themselves and of the people they meet. Individuals who are willing to open themselves up and to grow.

Just as important, you must be willing to articulate your thoughts on camera, both about the experiences on the trip and the interviews.
When do I find out if my team was chosen?
Check the Apply page for deadline dates. www.roadtripnation.com/participate/apply.php

All applicants will receive details on dates and the selection process via the Application Hub and e-mails from Roadtrip Nation staff.
Who should I talk to if I have a question or problem with the Application?
Ray, our Roadtrip Director. E-mail him atRay@roadtripnation.com.
For technical support, please e-mail support@roadtripnation.com.
How do I add or delete team members on my application?
On the "team management” button on the left hand side of your application home page, you can add and delete members of your team. You can do this during the first round of the application.

The Roadtrip and Interviews
Where will we go on our Roadtrip?
That is up to you and your team. Most of our Green RV trips take place within the U.S.; after the final teams have been selected they will work together to plan out their routes so interviews can be booked accordingly. The selected teams will get more instruction from their mentors/filmers.
I see that you have Green RV trips in Australia and New Zealand? Can we take the RV abroad?
Every once and awhile we have special opportunities available to hit the road abroad. In general, our Green RV trips are planned within the U.S., but keep an eye on our website for news of applications for special roadtrips opportunities. You never know where we will head to next …
Who do we interview? And how do we get in contact with them?
This is up to you and your teammates. It's important to choose individuals because you are personally interested in what they are doing with their life. Perhaps they have exceeded a level of happiness and success in their life that is above average, and are passionate about what they do. They don't have to be famous; they just need to be interesting to you and your teammates.

You and your teammates will be responsible for getting in contact with them through a process we call cold calling. More instruction will be given to the selected teams by their mentors/filmers.
Is it just a team of three on the RV for the duration of the roadtrip?
Nope, you'll have company! Two of Roadtrip Nation's friendly filmers will accompany you and your team in the RV for the duration of the trip to capture your journey.
How long is the Green RV roadtrip? When does it take place?
Green RV roadtrips normally last five to six weeks, and take place during the summer-- typically during July and August. The selected teams will help determine the final dates with our filmers.
What does a typical day on the road look like?
Days on the road are typically hectic. They can be jam-packed with interviews and other exciting activities. Here is an average day on the road with interviews:

7:30am: Cameras on. Wake up in the RV. Make breakfast.
8:30am: Driving/Navigating to your first interview of the day.
10:00am-12:00pm: Interview.
12:00pm: Post-interview filming.
12:30pm: Grab a quick lunch and back on the road again.
2:00pm-4:00pm: Interview.
4:00pm: Post interview filming.
4:30pm: Go downtown check out the city.
5:00pm: Have dinner at a local eatery.
6:00pm: Drive 200 miles to the next city.
10:00pm: Find a place to spend the night.
11:00pm: Go to bed. Cameras off.
Do we do interviews every day? Can we do other things?
That is all up to how you plan and space out your trip before you take off. If you plan wisely beforehand, you can schedule free days without interviews to check out a city or a national park, and participate in other activities on the road. Remember, an important part of a roadtrip is experiencing foreign places and doing new things.
Do we have to do any of the filming ourselves?
During the trip itself, no. That is what the filmers are there for. You will be required to narrate and vocalize your thoughts to the camera, as well as preparing yourself for the interviews, but you will not need to film.

However, prior to leaving for the trip, we may send you a handheld camera to capture your home life and the planning process of the trip.
Do we actually have to sleep in the RV?
Of course! That is half the fun. The RV becomes your home for the course of the trip. Home, sweet home!
Do we have to drive the RV? I don't know how to do that!
Yes, you guys are the ones behind the wheel of the big, green RV. But fear not: You will have a crash course in RV operation, taught by some of the most skilled RV drivers this side of the Mississippi!
Does anyone ever get voted off the RV?
Umm…no.
