Antonio's Open Road
Growing up in Delaware, actor and storyteller Antonio Sacre had two choices in high school: intramural bowling or theater. When he got cut from bowling, theater was the default that turned into a hobby. After high school, Antonio went to Boston College where he continued his theater track. There, he told a professor he wanted to act for a living, but the professor told him he wasn't good enough. If he really wanted to make it, he had to work hard and suggested Chicago would be a good place for Antonio to start. Antonio continued to Northwestern University in Chicago for graduate school where he learned about the art of storytelling. He started to write his own story and perform it on stage, and soon enough, he was getting offers to do storytelling for kids in local schools. Antonio had found his niche. In 1997, he won the Fringe Festival Award for Excellence. But Antonio didn't always have supporters: his father didn't agree with his choice to be a storyteller and refused to come to any of his shows. It wasn't until Antonio got the chance to do a big show at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., that his father realized his passion for storytelling and that he's happy in the path he's chosen.
